University of Otago Dental School Redevelopment
About the project
Following on from the highly successful completion of the Burwood Hospital Redevelopment project, Leighs Cockram JV commenced work on a major redevelopment of the University of Otago’s dental school: the largest capital redevelopment the University has ever undertaken.

The 8,000m2 clinical services building connects to the rear of the Dental School’s existing 10,000m2 Walsh building. Key to the project was creating a cohesive language between these buildings, connecting new with old, to ensure an ease of navigation for patients, staff and students alike.

The new facility houses key clinical services, featuring an innovative surgery design for general practice dentistry with a variety of specialist dental clinics. The undergraduate and postgraduate teaching facilities include over 200 new dental chairs making it the largest dental installation in New Zealand. Eleven clinics provide a range of services, including general practice dentistry, oral surgery, orthodontics, paediatrics, special needs, radiology and primary care.

The existing Walsh building houses flexible learning spaces, dentistry-specific teaching laboratories, academic accommodation and a new home for the Sir John Walsh Research Institute, a research facility dedicated to the research of oral health.
