The role

Leighs Construction is committed to Health and Safety, and we are recruiting for a Health and Safety Manager (Site Based) in Invercargill to help drive our Health and Safety strategies, provide professional advice to our site teams and support our continued success and growth. This will be an autonomous position responsible for all Health & Safety matters in the Southland Region.

About the role:

A hands on operational role, with high levels of autonomy, you will be supporting the project to embrace H&S initiatives and truly create a culture that reflects this.

  • Approval of contractors (their SSSP, H&S policies, Training Registers, Task Analysis etc)
  • Ensuring the project is set up and maintained in accordance with Leighs OHSMS
  • Auditing the project against Leighs OHSMS and best practice guidelines
  • Attending project safety meetings
  • Incident management, including investigating incidents and accidents
  • Assisting with Inductions
  • Assisting site staff with hazard management and task analysis planning
  • Advise/Train/Coach/Mentor staff and subcontractors in their health & safety responsibilities and ensure they understand safe working practices in their areas

This is a vital role within the site leadership team

You'll be a special Health & Safety person, with experience and skills in:

  • Working knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements and familiarity with AS/NZS4801
  • Previous experience with subcontractor prequalification and onboarding processes
  • Sound technical health & safety knowledge with the ability to take a pragmatic approach to solving problems
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, communicate and partner with people to drive safety performance and culture change
  • Working across multiple sites in commercial construction
  • Investigation and incident management
  • Hold or be working towards a recognised health and safety qualification
